Unlike every other game in the series,Devil May Cry 5has a pretty substantial secret that most players are likely to miss on their first playthrough. If the player manages to conquer a certain challenge at the end of the game's prologue, then they'll unlock a secret ending vastly different in almost every way from the story's standard conclusion.
At the end ofDevil May Cry 5'sprologue mission, the player is met with a nearly insurmountable challenge. In an unexpected turn of events,DMC5holds nothing back by throwing the game's main antagonist right at them from the onset. By this point, the player has been in the game for all of20 minutes, and has unlocked no extra abilities. So, in all likelihood, the demon lord Urizen will probably wipe the floor with them in this bout. Luckily, this is a boss fight which the designers do not expect the player to win. Once the player's health bar empties, the story progresses and both Nero and Dante are defeated. Dante stays behind to hold Urizen off while Nero and V flee with heroic cowardice. The player will get another shot at Urizen later on, but to unlock the secret ending they'll have to beat him in the prologue. Unfortunately the player is still vastly underequipped for the job, so it's advisable to beat the game at least once and come back once they've buffed up a bit.

Now, Nero and V are left to clean up the mess they failed to get rid of in the first mission. The rest of the game follows them on their journey back up to Urizen's throne room, which sits at the top of a massive, supernatural tree known at the Qliphoth. The tree grows upside down out of the demon realm, doubling as a portal to hell while its roots simultaneously drain humans of their blood. Along the way theDevil May Cry team rescues their friends, including Dante, who goes off on his own in order to power himself up. In doing so, he gains a new form called the Sin Devil Trigger, which allows him to defeat Urizen even after the demon king receives his own strength-boost.
Devil May Cry 5'sNormal Ending Explained

Unfortunately, V arrives at the last minute to steal Dante's kill. In the process he reveals himself to be Dante's brother, Vergil, who split himself into demonic and human halves in a bid to gain more power. As it turns out, Urizen is Vergil's demonic half, and when V kills Urizen the two recombine into Vergil once more. The twin sons of Spardaimmediately go about resuming their blood feud, but Dante is too weak from previous battles to stand a chance. Vergil leaves early to allow Dante some much-needed rest and recovery. After all, he wants to beat Dante in a fair fight. When Dante goes after Vergil, Nero insists on joining him to prove that he isn't just "dead weight." Unfortunately for Nero, Dante won't allow him because, as it turns out, Nero is Vergil's son, and Dante doesn't want Nero to be responsible for the death of his own father.
Dante catches up with Vergil and the two duke it out again, only for their battle to result in a draw. In recombining his halves, Vergil also gained a Sin Devil Trigger, and now he and Dante are practically even. Despite this, both remain intent on killing one another. Their sibling rivalry is ruined, however, when Nero comes busting back in with a new Devil trigger form of his own. While Dante and Vergil had been fighting, Nero realized that he could not live with either brother killing the other, and so he returns to the Qliphoth's apex to put an end to their fighting. He challenges Vergil, and the two agree that if Nero wins both brothers will stop trying to kill each other. Nero manages to win the battle with his dead-beat dad, but the group is still left with the Qliphoth to deal with.
Chopping the Qliphoth down is small potatoes for people like Dante and Vergil, but unfortunately it's only possible to do so while in hell, and that means whoever is down there will be stuck once the portal closes. Dante and Vergil volunteer themselves as interdimensional lumberjacks, leaving the responsibilities of being humanity's protector to Nero. Of course, the two resume fighting the minute they get the chance. For now it seems like the rest of theDMCseries is in Nero's hands ,while Dante and Vergil spend the next eternity playing friendly games of "stab your brother with a pointy object."
Devil May Cry 5's "Secret Ending" Explained

Now that the player has gone ahead and beaten the game normally, they'll be able to go back toolderDevil May Cry 5 missions with all of their upgrades. This makes beating the Urizen boss fight at the end of the prologue much easier. The player has more health, more moves, and the advantage of both Devil breakers and Devil Busters. These arms will prove themselves incredibly useful, because one of the popular strategies to defeat prologue Urizen is to use Nero's Ragtime Breaker to pause time, and then combining that with his Buster grabs and Devil Trigger to deal massive amounts of damage while Urizen's defenses are down.

Beating prologue Urizen, however, nets the player a rather disappointing reward. Instead of a cool alternate cutscene or a secret reward that adds more substance to the gameplay, text appears on the screen reading "The one who usurped the demon throne was vanquished. Peace returned to the world above. Indeed, this was the perfect conclusion all had hoped for. Come, raise your fist in victory and celebration. A new legend has been born." After that the credits roll and the player has nothing to do but replay the story and beat Devil May Cry 5again, practice in the void, or play through bloody palace. It's a rather lukewarm reward for something that takes most player at least one entire playthrough (and then a little extra) to accomplish.
WhyDMC5's Normal Ending Still Isn't That Great

Even though it's better than the secret ending, Devil May Cry 5'snormal ending isn't much of an exceptional conclusion totheDevil May Cry storyfrom an objective standpoint. All of Nero's character development happens in the game's final two or three missions, and the power gap he crosses in the process is illogical even for a series that tends to throw logic to the wind. At this point, Dante and Vergil trump interdimensional gods with reality warping abilities, and yet Nero (who is roughly depicted as being similar strength to young Dante inDMC3) is suddenly able to go toe-to-toe with them without undergoing many of the same challenges as his predecessors.
However, it does succeed in giving theDMCcommunity somefan service.DMCfans love seeing wacky Dante and stoic Vergil duke it out, and they love seeing Nero get irritated. They like seeing stylish animations and cool transformations.DMC5'sending has all of those things in spades, so even though it doesn't hit the same emotional notes asDMC3'sstory, it's still a fun ride.
Unfortunately, it seems thatDevil May Cry 5'ssecret ending is even less substantial than the regular one, especially given the amount of work it takes to attain for the average player. There's no extra cutscene or in-game bonuses. It is a far cry from the secret endings players can get in games likeSilent Hill.Still, it is at least somewhat interesting that the player can go back and conquer a challenge they were never expected to overcome. It provides incentive to go ahead and play through the early game again. If anything,Devil May Cry 5is a game about upgrading one's character and perfecting their combat skills. The secret ending, as lacking as it is, allows players to see how far they've come since they first touched the game.

5 Vergil Is Stronger Than Dante
Of course, Dante wins in the end (with the exception of Devil May Cry 5,) but that's mostly because of Dante's own abilities and not Vergil's lack of strength. When it comes to power, Vergil can overpower Dante reliably.
